State Program:

Montana does not require a statewide food handler certificate. The state does not set formal training hours, expiration periods, or recertification rules for food handler training. Requirements are determined at the county level.

Because there is no statewide mandate, Montana accepts ANSI-accredited food handler training programs in jurisdictions that permit nationally accredited courses.

Certificate expiration, training hours, and renewal requirements are not specified at the state level.

County Specific Information:

Food handler training is required only in Sanders County. All food establishment employees working in Sanders County must obtain a food handler certificate.

Certificates issued in Sanders County are valid for 3 years. Employees must complete 4 hours of training and pass the required exam. Recertification is required and employees must retake the exam to renew their certificate.

New employees must obtain the required training within 90 days of hire, unless they already hold a valid Food Handler Certificate recognized by Sanders County.
