State Program:

New Mexico requires all food employees who handle food, food-contact surfaces, or utensils to obtain a valid food handler card. This requirement took effect on January 1, 2019, and has been enforced statewide since April 1, 2019.

Food handler cards in New Mexico are valid for 3 years. Recertification is required every three years and must include both training and the associated exam.

Certain employee categories may qualify for exemptions as outlined in the New Mexico Food Code. Employers are responsible for ensuring that all required employees maintain valid certification.
