South Carolina requires food handler training for food employees to maintain food
safety standards. In addition, every food establishment must have a
Person in Charge (PIC) present during all hours of operation.
Food handler certificates in South Carolina are generally
valid for 3 years. Recertification requires retaking the appropriate
course and exam.
Facilities that handle time/temperature control for safety (TCS) foods must ensure that
employees have valid food handler certification. Establishments requiring a Certified Food
Protection Manager (CFPM) must follow certification requirements outlined by state rules.
Certain facilities serving only pre-cooked commercial TCS foods, scooped ice cream,
milkshakes, sundaes, or baked goods may require a food handler certificate even if a CFPM
is not required to be on staff.
