Utah requires all food handlers—including cooks, servers, dishwashers, host staff, and
cashiers handling potentially hazardous foods—to obtain a Food Handler Card
within 30 days of hire.
Training must be completed through an approved Utah provider, including
the Utah Restaurant Association. Certificates are obtained through the official
Food Handlers Permit system managed by the association:
Utah Restaurant Association – Food Handlers Permit
Training is available online or in classroom format. Utah Food Handler Cards are
valid for 3 years, and recertification requires retaking the course and exam
every three years.
The standard certification fee is approximately $15, though fees may vary
slightly depending on the approved training provider.
Food handler training is also recommended—but not mandated—for
employees in commissaries, farmers markets, schools, healthcare facilities, retail food
establishments, and support roles such as nursing aides.
