Kentucky STAR – Server Training in Alcohol Regulations

The STAR training program is offered by the Kentucky Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC). It covers Kentucky liquor laws, age-identification, preventing service to intoxicated patrons, and responsible alcohol service practices.

While statewide training is not strictly required for all servers, STAR is accepted statewide and many municipalities, counties or employers mandate it. Certification after completion is valid for 3 years.

Steps to Be Compliant in Kentucky:

  1. Complete the STAR training course:
Take an approved Kentucky STAR course through the ABC portal or approved provider.
  2. Obtain your certificate of completion:
After passing the training/exam, you receive certification valid for three years.
  3. Check local/municipal requirements:
Confirm with your local jurisdiction or employer if STAR is required in your county or city.
  4. Maintain documentation and renew:
Keep your certificate on file and retake training before the three-year expiration.

Program Benefits:

1. Enhanced Compliance with Kentucky Alcohol Laws
Training covers Kentucky liquor laws, responsible service, ID verification and over-service prevention—keeping your team aligned and compliant.

2. Reduced Liability & Risk Exposure
By teaching identification verification, intoxication recognition and refusal skills, STAR lowers the risk of unlawful service and civil or administrative liability.

3. Meet Employer & Municipal Expectations
Many employers, insurers and local jurisdictions require or prefer STAR certification—even when statewide law does not. Certification helps satisfy those expectations.

4. Standardized Training Across Staff
STAR ensures all servers, sellers and managers receive consistent training in Kentucky regulations, best practices, and risk-reduction—promoting uniform service quality.

5. Valid Certificate for 3 Years
Certification remains valid for three years after completion, giving employers and employees a clear renewal cycle.
