Ohio Alcohol Server Knowledge (ASK) Program
Ohio’s Alcohol Server Knowledge (ASK) Program is a voluntary responsible beverage
service training program. It is strongly recommended for anyone who sells, serves, or supervises
the sale of alcoholic beverages, including bartenders, servers, managers, and clerks.
The ASK program is offered in person by the Ohio Investigative Unit (OIU), and
similar Ohio-focused responsible beverage service courses are available online through various
training providers. Although not mandated by state law, completion of ASK or an
equivalent program may be considered a mitigating factor if a liquor law violation occurs.
Most Ohio-aligned training programs issue certificates that are valid for approximately
3 years, and many employers adopt a three-year renewal cycle in their policies.
Steps to Use ASK in Ohio:
-
Check employer and local expectations:
While ASK is voluntary at the state level, many employers, insurers, or local licensing authorities
may require responsible beverage service training.
-
Choose a training option:
Attend an in-person ASK training provided by the Ohio Investigative Unit, or
complete an Ohio-focused responsible server/seller course through an approved online provider.
-
Complete the course and obtain a certificate:
Training covers Ohio alcohol laws, checking IDs, recognizing intoxication, refusing sales or service,
and recordkeeping. After completion, you receive a certificate for employer or licensing records.
-
Renew training approximately every 3 years:
Follow your employer’s policy or provider guidance; many operations use a three-year renewal cycle
to keep staff current.
Program Benefits:
1. Mitigation of Penalties for Violations
While ASK is voluntary, documented server training can be taken into account if an establishment
is cited for a liquor violation, showing good-faith efforts toward compliance.
2. Reduced Liability & Risk Exposure
Training helps servers and managers understand Ohio liquor laws, properly verify IDs, recognize
intoxication and refuse service when necessary, reducing legal and civil risk.
3. Meets Employer & Insurance Expectations
Many employers and insurers strongly prefer or require formal alcohol server training. ASK or
equivalent training supports those expectations.
4. Standardized Training Across Staff
Ensures that bartenders, servers, and managers follow consistent procedures for ID checks,
intoxication assessment, and intervention.
5. Predictable 3-Year Renewal Cycle
A three-year training interval provides a clear schedule for refreshers and helps keep knowledge
and practices up to date.
